With the advent of Dr. Tony Kemp in 1976 the music at All Saints was put on a new footing. The organist became responsible for the choir but this was not made official by the PCC until 1981 when the title became "Organist & Choirmaster" and the assistant was known as "Assistant Organist". There was no appointed assistant until 1981 and so those who deputised until 1981 (Janet Low from 1977 and Peter Leppard from 1980) had no official status. In 1982 the position became "Director of Music" with the assistant's position being "Deputy Director of Music".

From September 2004 until February 2005 there was an interregnum where visiting organists were employed. These included David Rance (who played for most of the services and took charge of the choir), Sandra Rigby Barrett, David Old, Nick Shaw, David Stannard and Michael Thomas.

From 2001 the position of Deputy Director of Music has been in abeyance.
