All Saints' ChurchAll Saints is an Anglican church in the Diocese of Oxford and has been a focal point for Christian worship in Wokingham for over eight hundred years. Indeed, until 1863 it was the only church in the town. The church stands to the east of the town centre and was built on the site of a Saxon chapel. It is easily recognised by its rendered stone tower. All Saints began life In the twelfth century as a "Chapel of Ease" in the diocese of Salisbury and was dedicated by the Bishop of Salisbury around the time that Wokingham received its charter to hold a market in the town square. It was built on land that was the property of a large estate owner at Amesbury in Wiltshire. This piece of land stretched to Ruscombe (which is now part of Twyford). All Saints became a church in the fifteenth century. The whole came into the control of Berkshire in 1845.The church today is a lively community and the church's website has information about all aspects of the life of the church. |
