“Sing to the Lord with Heart and Voice” – the Choir at Bury St Edmunds

by Esmé Few

Five p.m. on Thursday the Dumb Day,
I arrived at the School but knew not the way
To the lodgings; found them at last and a room hot as hell
Engineers had left the heating on – and went home – Ah well!
Food not too bad (we’ve had worse); there were good salads galore
But the girls in the Sun all day – Oh dear, they were sore!

Friday was hard work again to sing laud and praise,
Cathedral in wraps, but a lovely acoustic.
Then the tour with its tales of St Edmund,
The Vikings killed him with arrows then off came his head.
A wolf found his head – but where did they bury St Edmund?

Saturday singing, lovely to be with old friends,
Three Sunday services, the praise never ends.
We had a good party to say our good-bye
Katharina and Kirsten to Germany must fly.

We completed the jigsaw, drank sherry with the Dean
They were happy to have us and “Please come again”.
Then once more it’s all over and off home we go
To an uncertain future, but this we all know
The Choir will be singing God’s Praises – you bet!
So watch out All Saints ‘cos you aint lost us yet!’
